Aubrey
By David Gates of Bread

Verse 1
G           G                        Em
And Aubrey was her name,
Gmaj7      C                                   Am7
A not so very ordinary girl or name.
Am7                       G         G
But who's to blame?
Em     Eb   G                      C#m7-5
For a love that wouldn't bloom
Cmaj7                               G              Gmaj7
For the hearts that never played in tune.
Am7                G               C                       G
Like a lovely melody that everyone can sing,
Am7                         G                       C                      C#m7-5  Am D7sus D7
Take away the words that rhyme it doesn't mean a thing.
Verse 2
G           G                        Em
And Aubrey was her name.
Gmaj7      C                                   Am7
We tripped the light and danced together to the moon,
Am7                       G         G
But where was June.
Em     Eb   G                      C#m7-5
No it never came around.
Cmaj7                               G              Gmaj7
If it did it never made a sound,
Am7                G               C                       G
Maybe I was absent or was listening to fast,
Am7                         G                       C                      C#m7-5  G
Catching all the words, but then the meaning going past,
B7                                Em
But God I miss the girl,
Em             G                                                  C
And I'd go a thousand times around the world just to be
Cm                               G     C    G   C  G  Am7 G
Closer to her than to me.
Verse 3
G                                       Em
And Aubrey was her name,
Gmaj7           C                     C                           Am7
I never knew her, but I loved her just the same,
Am7                  G
I loved her name
Em       Eb G                       C#m7-5
Wish that I had found a way,
Cmaj7                                 G                   Gmaj7
And the reason that would make her stay.
Am7                            G               C                G
I have learned to lead a life apart from all the rest;
Am7                    G
If I can’t have the one I want,
     C                              C#m7-5
I'll do do without the rest.
Outro
B7                                Em
And God, I miss the girl
Em               G                                          C
And I’d go a thousand times around the world just to say
Cm                                    G
She had been mine for a day.

The Band
Bread was an American soft rock band from Los Angeles, California. They placed 13 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1970 and 1977 and were an example of what later was labeled as soft rock.
The band consisted of David Gates (vocals, bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, violin, viola, percussion), Jimmy Griffin (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion) and Robb Royer (bass guitar, guitar, flute, keyboards, percussion, recorder, backing vocals). Jim Gordon (Drums, percussion, piano), Mike Botts (drums, percussion) replaced Royer when he joined in the summer of 1969 and Larry Knechtel (keyboards, bass guitar, guitar, harmonica) replaced Royer in 1971. The Story Behind the Song
David Gates wrote this song after watching the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, starring Audrey Hepburn. The song itself had nothing to do with the movie, but moodiness of the film had set him up to write it.
Gates: "I hardly ever write any 'name' songs, but I loved that name and the way it flowed in that particular melody. That may be the best melody I've ever written." (song facts)

Aubrey - Video - Lyrics - Bread

Aubrey was written and composed by David Gates and performed by his soft rock band Bread in 1972. It appeared in their album Guitar Man and lasted 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at number 15.
