Tips For Buying a Guitar
By Derek Lloyd
A guitar is a musical instrument that you can choose to learn if you possess the passion and talent to play it correctly. Your talent can be polished with the help of a few lessons from a professional. Make sure that you genuinely want to learn to play a guitar before you buy it because it can be a little expensive. Its price goes on increasing, depending on the various types of guitars available in the market. You need to consider many things when you buy your first guitar. You might also have to choose between an acoustic and an electric guitar. If you are a beginner and have not tried learning to play the guitar, an acoustic guitar should be preferred as it is less expensive in comparison to the electric guitar. It will not hurt your pocket that much if it gets damaged or breaks during your lessons.
You should research and find out the best shops in your locality where you can buy a good guitar. When you have shortlisted a few musical equipment shops, visit them and enquire about the prices of the guitar that you are interested in. While buying a guitar, do not forget to check a few basic characteristics of it. Firstly, check the neck of the guitar. If it is a straight neck, look out for any cracks near that area. If there are no cracks, the guitar can be bought. Guitars are available with a variety of necks. If it is a bolt-on neck, there should be excessive side-to-side play that cannot be removed by tightening the mounting screws. If it is a set neck, there should not be any signs of a defective joint. Also, check around the heel, or strings that rise or fall considerably from the point of the neck joint to the bridge of the guitar.
Similarly, check the entire body of the guitar for any cracks or other minor faults. The material of the guitar should be stable and not damaged from certain places that are completely hidden or not always visible. The area near the jack or the jack plate should be smooth without any damage or cracks. There should be not be an excessive bulge between the bridge and the end pin of the guitar. It will create a problem while playing the guitar as it will put more pressure on the strings. They might tend to come off easily then. The looks and the finishing of the guitar also matter a lot. The material used for the finishing should not be of low quality. Also, check if the tuners function properly without slipping. The bridge should be secured with stable slots and saddles that are not worn out. The condition of the nuts should be good as well.
In general, the guitar should work smoothly and play the correct tones. Play all the possible notes you know before buying that particular guitar. This will help you understand the quality of sound the guitar produces and if the strings are securely attached or not. Prefer nylon strings over steel strings if you are buying an acoustic guitar. Nylon strings do not hurt your fingers much and produce a smooth as well as sweet sound that is not harsh or loud to the ears.
