Some people said that the flamenco guitar intro was a guitar
clip from a record, but it was actually played on a mellotron
Mark2. The mandolin and the bassoon appearing on the song too
were also played on Mellotron Mark2 by Beatles assistant Chris
Thomas.
The mellotron was a keyboard in which you played some sampled
instruments contained in tapes. The Mark 2 model had two side
by side keyboards. On the right keyboard there were 18 "lead
instrument" sounds arranged in six banks and the left keyboard
played 7 seconds prerecorded musical rhythms and fills tracks
in various styles, among which was the flamenco intro used in
this song. That model's sounds were as follows:
Organ - Hammond, church and percussive organ with
leslie
Strings - Solo violins, solo celli, Mandolin, and
combinations and string sections.
Brass - Trumpet, trombone and sax.
Larger sections and combinations.
Winds - Flute, clarinet and basson
Choirs - Male, female, augmented choirs and octave.
Percussion - Vibraphone, bass drum, snare drum.
Plus the mentioned left keyboard effect loops: Foxtrot Sax
Phrases, Dixie Land Trombone, Cha Cha Flutes, Bungalow Bill
Guitar intro, Moving Bass Cello and Violin Chords, Bossa
Nova Cello and Violins Moving Chords.
For many years I'd have sweared that it was a flamenco pastiche
intro by John. It sounded deliberate, maybe satirical, just like
in a caricature. We all know that he had been in Almeria, Spain,
two years before, where he was filming Richard Lester's "How I
Won The War" and where he wrote STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER, as we
all know, and most probably John might have learnt to play a few
chords and a couple of scales from someone. I had the feeling
that it was him who had played that intro and that impression was
reinforced by the fact that the scale structure is not what we
could call orthodox and the guy who recorded the sample stumbled
twice and also missed a low G note. It doesn't sound at all like
a professional flamenco player, but it was precisely that which
sounded when you pressed that low key on the Mark2.
Song Back Story

Lennon wrote this about a guy he met at the Maharishi's camp in India who loved to hunt. The four Beatles went on the retreat to study meditation, but were not impressed with the results.
The hunter's name was Richard A. Cooke, and his wife Bronwyn explained in Mojo magazine September 2008 that Richard, "had asked the Maharishi if it was a sin to kill a tiger. John and George were in the room. Maharishi's response was, 'Life destruction is Life destruction.' Rik has not shot anything since. He became a freelance photographer for National Geographic."
John Lennon called this quirky tune, "A sort of teenage social-comment song and a bit of a joke."
Yoko Ono sang the line "Not when he looked so fierce." It was the first female vocal on a Beatles song.
The Beatles recorded this in an overnight session. Everyone around the studio was invited to sing on the chorus. Ringo's wife Maureen sang harmony.
